Nokia confirms N96 release date … sort of

Yesterday saw Nokia announce its Q2 financial results to the world. There were some interesting nuggets of information in there.

In regards to the N96 release date, Executive Vice President of Devices Kai Oistamo gave a clear answer during the conference call for those of us that are waiting with baited breath :

“The N96 … we expect to start selling in this quarter.”

For what will be a flagship phone, you’d have hoped for a clearer answer. Another article written about the results presentation states :

“Nokia’s top-of-the-range N96 model will go on sale by the end of September”

Well, given that’s the end of the quarter, that’s not any clearer either.

There was some light shed on the touch screen question though. Once again, Kai Oistamo:

“Kai Oistamo, head of Nokia’s devices business flagged the Finnish firms response in a conference call with analysts.

‘We are fully committed to bringing to the market a complete portfolio of the touch devices, for the mass market, the high end and even at the low end. Our first touch device will be aimed solely at the volume part of the market,’ Oistamo said.

Nokia’s Chief Financial Officer Rick Simonson told Reuters the phone would fall into high mid-end or low high-end of devices, which analysts said would cost 350-400 euros excluding subsidies.”

So touch is coming to Nokia later this year, although it looks like it will be a while before the N96 or its descendants (the so called high end phones) have it implemented.

There’s a number of other articles about the results release so it is worth having a look to see what was said for anyone that is interested.

In the meantime the release date debate continues … in my next article I’ll summarise when the other blogs believe the phone is likely to be released.
