Nokia N96 NAM (North America / USA Model) Revealed ; Nokia N85, Nokia N79 Announcements

It’s been a big news day in the world of Nokia … stories are flying left and right, and although our main focus is of course the Nokia N96, I’ll let you know about the other interesting bits too a bit further down.

Firstly though, Nokia has released the specs for it’s North America version of the Nokia N96. Due to the different mobile technologies etc used in Europe vs North American it’s not as simple to use the one phone in America and in Europe as it is to say use your European phone in Asia. Hence the need to release slightly different versions.

So, what does the USA Nokia N96 have? Well, it’s not all that different to the European version really - with dual-band 850/1900MHz WCDMA instead of 900/2100MHz WCDMA. Which means nothing to most people … all the other other features are, as far as I’m aware, exactly the same. It’s release is due in Q4 08.

In other Nokia News

Nokia have unvealed both the Nokia N85 and the Nokia N79 . I won’t go into too much detail here about the N79 - it’s unlikely to end up the hands of anyone thinking N96. However the N85 is another story.

At present it beats the N96 in the following ways :

  • micro usb charging
  • AM OLED screen that uses less power
  • physical lens cover
  • stronger battery
  • fm transmitter (yes, not just a receiver, a transmitter too)

Meanwhile the N96 wins on the following attributes :

  • marginally bigger screen
  • digital tv tuner (only useful in certain countries)
  • more memory

No doubt it will all depend on what everyone uses their phone for. It does surprise me though that some of those features hadn’t been incorporated in the Nokia N96 - will the N96 be aimed more at business users, with the N85 being more of a direct iPhone competitor? Who knows.

My one ongoing criticism of Nokia (and really, it is the only one) … all these new phones still rely on Dual LED for a flash … bring on Xenon Flashes … now!! It’s the one thing stopping the camera’s from being perfect (well, that and the occassional auto-focus issue).

But wait, there’s more …

It seems the mobile phone companies have squashed Nokia into submission somewhat, and the Nokia N96 will NOT be shipping with VOIP software. It will VOIP capable, but it seems the big companies probably didn’t like users having the ability to make free calls.

That’s all from the newsdesk for now.
