Nokia N96 To Hit India First In Ongoing Iphone War
India looks set to be the first in the world to receive the Nokia N96 in what appears to be a global continuation of the iPhone vs N96 war.
India was due to receive the iPhone on August 22nd, and according to reports Nokia will be launching the Nokia N96 in India on or close to the same time.
There is some confusion in the various articles around. Some sites are saying that the Nokia N96 is currently only available for pre-order, while other blogs seem to be indicating that the product has already been released. Part of the difficulty is that there aren’t really any N96 Bloggers based in India (that I know of anyway) so we’re relying on a mix of news coming from various sources over there.
India is seen as one of the biggest growth markets for mobile phone companies, and it is perhaps no surprise that, if they can, Nokia is stepping in as early as possible to convince people to buy a N96 instead of an iPhone. By the time the N96 releases in other parts of the world the new iPhones will have been available for a couple of months.
In any case, the news has allowed us to learn a little more about the N96, in particular which applications are to be installed (Source : Symbian Blog) :
PREINSTALLED THIRD PARTY APPLICATIONS
I absolutely love quality third party applications and its great to see Nokia take steps to make people realise the true potential of their S60 device. The application set the N96 is set to ship with is quite impressive.
- Wave Secure: The application enables you to secure everything on the device wirelessly. One can save and create a back up of all data (contacts, SMS, call logs and calendar entries) through the Internet. Additionally, in the event that it is lost or stolen, WaveSecure helps remotely wipe out all data from the device to prevent misuse, lock the device remotely and even track any new SIM card inserted. A definite must have. It might not be as powerful as Guardian, but packs nifty additional features such as online backups.
- Oxford Dictionary: A dictionary is one of the first things I install on my phone and like the newer Eseries, the N96 will ship with an Oxford English dictionary containing over 2,40,000 words, phrases & definitions in the A-Z format and help for spelling & grammar.
It’s not completely clear whether or not the same apps will be available for the UK release … we’ll keep you posted as more news comes to hand.
UPDATE :
A big thank you to Vaibhav from India and thesymbianblog.com who left the following comment :
“Hi, i’m based in India and I can tell you for sure that the N96 is only being prebooked as of now and is slated to be available come early September.”
So it seems that India is still waiting just like the rest of it, but I guess by allowing pre-orders already it is at least stealing some of Apple’s thunder. Stay tuned folks, it’s getting interesting!!

‘A definite must have. It might not be as powerful as Guardian, but packs nifty additional features such as online backups.’ – how do you justify this claim? What do you mean by ‘powerful’?
I find that Guardian has fancy features, most of which are not essential for the average user regularly. Wave Secure in my opinion has just the right options, which is just what the normal user might require.
